Bridge The Gap Between TV Watching And Book Reading With Disney Books

For most children these days, sitting in front of the TV is not something their parents have to force them to do. Actually, it's usually the other way around, as the parents have to beg their children to please turn the TV off and do something more productive! How many parents don't wish their children would watch less TV and read more books?

With all the negative programming on TV, there are a lot of things shown that parents do not want their children to see. For some, the best solution to this problem might be having select times of the day that their kids can watch television, or only allowing certain channels. For many, though, it has come down to only allowing them to watch videos. This means that the parents really have complete control over what their children will be exposed to, at least while in their own home.

Disney movies have long been valued by parents of small children as clean entertainment that usually teaches a good moral as well. Children love the animation and the fun story and parents love the not having to worry about what negative things the kids might be learning. It's a win-win situation, which is why most every child today has a favorite Disney movie that they've seen countless times and have memorized.

Although Disney, and other children's movies are a good alternative to some of the children's (and other) programming on television, they can still keep kids stuck in front of the TV for too long each day. If a child has the choice between watching a favorite Disney movie or reading a slower paced book, the movie will almost always win out. But if there is a book that tells the very same tale as their favorite movie? That might be a whole different story!

Disney books are most often picture books that tell the story of popular Disney movies with both pictures and words. Children love the familiar pictures, which are much like stills from the movie itself, and get involved in the words of the story, as they are hearing a familiar tale, but in a slightly different format. This is a great way to teach them that they can read about fascinating things, just as they can watch them on the screen.

Having a variety of Disney books at home is a great way to encourage the transition from too much time in front of the TV to more time spent with a book. Children will read the familiar story, and will likely become interested in other stories that they might not have seen on screen as well.

Another benefit of Disney books is that many of them are a retelling of stories told in classic literature. As children grow and mature, if they've developed a love of reading, they are likely to want to look into those “Disney stories” and read the actual story of Cinderella, or the Arabian Knights, or Snow White. Although some don't approve of the changes made to these stories in the Disney adaptations, still, it must be said that more people are interested in reading the classic stories because of exposure to the basic story from a Disney movie or Disney book.
